Why use cloth?
 
There are many reasons families decide to use cloth diapers.  Every family is going to have a great reason for going cloth, and here are mine...
 
 
One main factor in choosing cloth is that you know exactly what is coming into contact with your babies skin.  Have you ever read the list of ingredients on the side of a diaper package?  As you look over that package of diapers, I'll tell you that you won't find one.  Disposable diapers are exempt from the MSDS requirement under the Hazard Communication Guidelines of the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.  You are more than welcome to check out a disposable diapers website and try to find out the ingredients (and if you do let me know!) but all my attempts led me back to the same "We are not required to disclose.....".
 
Our biggest reason for using cloth is the amount of waste generated by the "disposable" diaper.  Lets say your newborn uses about 75 diapers a week that you are throwing into the trash.  That becomes 300 diapers a month, and times  75 by 52 and well, I think you get the picture.  I ran across a report published in 2005 (Municipal Solid Waste in the United States: 2005 Facts and Figures) that showed that disposable diapers accounted for 3.6 million tons of waste and 1.5% of the total waste generation for that year. The report specifically mentioned that no significant recycling or composting of disposable diapers was identified in 2006.  So now lets think of the 3.6 million tons of diapers, and how much of that is raw sewage sitting in that landfill.

If those two reasons aren't enough to get you to give cloth a serious thought, I'm not sure I know what will.

Today's cloth diaper

 

When I brought home our first cloth diaper, Josh was completely surprised by what he saw.  No crazy looking diaper pins, and a fun printed diaper cover to cover the cloth.  Long gone are the days of your mother's cloth diaper!  Nothing will beat a prefold diaper, those haven't changed much, but now instead of pins we use Snappis®, a T looking plastic piece with little fingers to hold the diaper in place, ouch free!  Cloth diaper covers have come a long way as well.  Fun prints adorn the fabric and with simple to use velcro tabs, you always know you have the perfect fit!
